Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London singer Natalie Shay to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm born and bred in north London. I've been playing classical guitar since I was 5 and around the same time started doing musical theatre, when I was 11 I taught myself chords and started writing songs, began gigging when I was 13 and here I am.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My first ever influence was Taylor Swift, she was the reason I started writing and playing with guitars. Now I'm more into bands such as Little Comets and I love 80s music.
How would you describe your sound?
Indie pop/rock 80s synth confetti songs.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
It's called 'People Like Me', it's about the way social media can make people feel like everyone around them is doing better and the struggles of starting out your career and feeling like everyone's doing so much better than you.
What’s your local music scene like?
In London the music scene is amazing, so much going on and so much opportunity.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would love to write with Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I once drove to Birmingham for a gig that was a week later.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I love musicals just as much as I love music.
