Dale Bolger

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Carlow singer Dale Bolger to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Carlow in Ireland. To be honest, I don’t remember a time where I wasn’t into music so this is a tough question. My earliest memories of music are listening to some of my dad's favourite bands/artists in his car so you could say that’s where it all started for me.

Who were your musical influences growing up and who are your influences now?
My favourite band as a kid was Def Leppard, they were the reason I first started playing guitar and probably my biggest influence. Other influences when I was growing up ranged between so many different genres. From Nirvana in grunge, Eminem in rap and Michael Jackson in pop. Some of these artists have influenced how I would like my music to sound while others have had an impact on how I write my songs and the attention to detail I put into some aspects of the tracks. One of my more modern influences would be Dermot Kennedy. I love his sound and I’m a huge fan of his approach to writing lyrics.

How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as pop with a little bit of an edge, the edge being brought by the live instruments we use in the recording studio.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called “From Home, Vol. I”. This is my debut EP so I’m really excited for it to finally be out there for people to hear. It’s made up of four songs I wrote over the last couple of years. Like most songs being released these days, this EP was influenced by things I have seen, stories I have heard and personal experiences. The sound and the creative process behind it was inspired by the artists I mentioned earlier.

What is your local music scene like?
My local music scene is very interesting. There are a lot of bands/musicians playing and making music. It’s great.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?
I’m hoping to get back in the studio by the end of 2019 and record some tracks to release next year. Besides that I’m just planning on increasing awareness of myself and my music and hopefully attract the attention of the right people that can help take my career to the next level.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Some of the artists I mentioned earlier like Dermot Kennedy or Eminem would be a dream to work with but I’m not going to get my hopes up. Besides those guys there are so many other artists I’d love to collaborate with. Too many to count and definitely too many to list here.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
This is a tough question to answer but I’ll do my best. I have a friend who studied in China for a year. He came home almost 2 years ago but whenever he comes to any of my shows I tell everyone he had just gotten home the day before, I make him stand up and I get everyone to welcome him home. He gets so embarrassed every time. It’s probably not the funniest strory I have but I always enjoy embarrassing my friends at my gigs.

What is the one thing you want readers to know about you?
I’m just a kid from Ireland who really loves music. It has always been my dream and my goal to perform songs I have written to crowds around the world and I realise that it’s a very big goal but I don’t plan on stopping until I have reached it!
