Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Derby singer Emzae to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I'm from Derby, which is right in the middle of the UK. The video to Your Woman by White Town was shot here. I've been into music all my life, and I don't really know where it started because there is no background of music in my family. I've just always wanted to be doing what I'm doing right now! It's a part of me.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I have a lot of different influences for different reasons. Probably my main two would be Damon Albarn and Lana Del Rey - the king and queen of melancholy - but I try not to listen to any music whilst I'm writing songs and I don't necessarily set out to sound like any of those artists.
How would you describe your sound?
Admittedly I'm not great with all this genre stuff, and I don't really think that way. So I often describe my music as melancholic pop with a light at the end of the tunnel. I basically think of most things as pop.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
It's called As This Day Fades to Another, and my official line is that it's about whether life could be less exhausting if we dropped our facades and stopped treating everything as a race. But it's also about how we might never be happy unless we learn to live in the moment.
What’s your local music scene like?
It's really exciting, diverse and welcoming. I've met some amazing people through playing live and collaborating.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
My plan is to keep putting out songs every few months. Eventually I'd love to release an album, but at the moment I'm just happy over here trying to continue building my audience. I'm also going on a mini tour this autumn visiting Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield. I'll be posting more details about it soon!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Timbaland is the dream!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Haha yes, I have a word doc called "stupid things that have happened to me at gigs" which I update periodically, but I'm afraid I'm saving them for either a blog post or a small coffee table book one day far in the future. Most recently I tripped over a monitor and sprained my wrist. It still hurts as I am typing this.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
This is a really hard one to answer! Can I say that I'm on Spotify and they can follow me there or by searching emzae? If so, then that's my answer.
You can find out more about Emzae via Facebook, Instagram, Spotify or Twitter.
