Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Essex singer George Redwood to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m based in Essex. I began singing professionally aged 13 singing covers on YouTube, taking part in local music showcases and performing at lots of musical events. I began songwriting aged 17 and have performed my own music ever since, performing covers from time to time.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences when I were growing up were all the icons and legends, of course the legendary Michael Jackson. I always adored and still do adore Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars. But recently I have been listening to, and been inspired by a lot of low key, upcoming artists. The passion that you get from these artists is so inspiring and raw. I love that.
How would you describe your sound?
I try not to fit into one box, or one category. Some days I write country, some days pop, some days r&b. I try everything lyrically, and stylistically. It stays more interesting that way. If I had to categorise my sound in two words I’d say, honest pop.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called ‘Bonita’ and when I was writing it I wanted to write a song that I could listen to, when on holiday or when I wanted to close my eyes and pretend I was on a beach somewhere. It’s very tropical and Latin inspired. I also tried my hand at singing in Spanish, which was fun.
What’s your local music scene like?
The Essex music scene has so many open mic nights, local competitions, and live showcases. I’m so grateful to have grown up in this scene and met so many amazing musicians, many of which have done some amazing things with their music careers!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I am releasing my first full length album this Friday (6th September 2019) featuring ten songs I have written and recorded myself. I am very excited and can’t wait to bring them to life on stage shortly after.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Of course I’d love to collaborate with Beyoncé, Bruno Mars or Ryan Tedder. So many amazing up and coming artists too, like Luke Burr, Benedict Cork and the vocal powerhouse Bobbie Harvey.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I have had far too many issues surrounding wired mic’s. I have fallen over too many times to mention, but hey! That’s the joys of live music! All you can do is laugh it off!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Every lyric you hear, every effect, every style, every decision regarding anything to do with my music only has one person to blame- myself. I’m completely self managed, and independent. Every penny I earn, every second I have is devoted purely to my music and bettering myself and my music. That is why I’m so grateful for every download, every share, every comment- good or bad. It makes it all so worth it. Thank you!
