Every Monday we will be bringing you an interview with an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday series. This week, we caught up with George from Ivory Wave.
Who is in Ivory Wave, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Me and Luke used to be in a band and always talked about creating a band that combined the elements of hip hop dance music and indie altogether. so one day we decided to find a guitarist who helped to create the sound of Ivory Wave and after a few months of writing we found a keyboard player and a drummer and we became Ivory Wave. Oh and the name me and Luke were sat in a pub one day trying to think of a name and we overheard somone talking about ‘ivory wave’ so we both looked at each other (it was a bit of a eureka moment) and said ‘that’s it’… it was only later we found out it was a legal high haha.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I always liked rock music Oasis, Nirvana and Blur to name a few. but there’s always been a constant influence from hiphop when I was a kid. My dad used to play Eminem in the car and I’d try to rap along. I can remember hearing the Stereo MCs’ Connected blasting through car speakers and thinking what the hell is this?!
How would you describe your sound?
It’s a combination between indie, hip hop and dance music, we’d hate to think we were just a pure indie band or a pure rock band, we always try and change things up a bit.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
The new single’s called Cool Kids, it was written after a news story seemed to be everywhere and everyone I spoke to tried to change my opinion on the subject. Cool Kids is about being able to think for yourself. Being able to wear what you want. Being able to believe what you want. It’s a celebration of youth I guess.
What’s your local music scene like?
Ahh good old ‘madlands’ it’s probably the best scene in the uk at the moment in my opinion with bands like Sugarthief, The Assist and Violet to name a few. We all go to each other’s shows and we all support each other, there’s a real unity in Birmingham at the moment. It’s gonna blow.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
We will definitely be releasing more music. We spent a lot of time last year touring and playing so we wanna concentrate on putting a lot of music out this year.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We really like a rapper called Franko Fraize and we’ve said to ourselves a few times ‘Franko would sound good on this’ haha. We’ve also always dreamed about having our tracks remixed to really bring out the dance side to us.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
They’re just crazy. We had the plug pulled at our last show because of a stage invasion. You can probably find a video of it on the internet. Pure chaos. Brilliant.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about your band?
Birmingham is alive.
