Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Dublin artist Archy Moor to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Dublin City, Ireland. I grew up in an area called Rathfarnham, but I am still only 18 so I guess I’m still growing up to this day but that’s where I spent the majority of my childhood. I got into music making because I had brief stints growing up where I would play one instrument, ditch it, learn another, ditch it and so on. I had a guitar I tried to learn how to play, but inevitably flopped at that and from time to time I would mess around on my sisters’ keyboard. I feel that is what kind of got me interested in making my own sounds and whatnot. I was also into story writing heavily, just that sense of being able to create my own world with words fascinated me.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up, my music taste touched everywhere. The rap/hip-hop stuff came at the very end, but before that I was mostly listening to like pop and rock. “Where’s Me Jumper” by The Sultans of Ping FC was literally rinsed and repeated endlessly. I was just into weird stuff like that. I feel the pop stuff kind of came about from just what everyone around me was into, nobody even touched on rap music where I grew up so I guess I didn’t want to feel like an outlier so I just went with what was the norm then, until I didn’t anymore and stopped caring about other people’s views about me. Odd Future/Tyler, The Creator was more or less my introduction into the hip-hop world. I remember taking in “Goblin” and “Bastard” and being like, “oh damn, am I supposed to be hearing half the songs on here?” just because of how extremely real they were. Even till today, I’d still put Tyler as a major influence of mine amongst others like, Frank Ocean and Mick Jenkins.
How would you describe your sound?
People always tell me that I sound like I don’t care in my songs; I just think that lethargic tone is what I do best! Whether it’s intentional or not, that is just how I’d like to listen back to myself because half the time if I make like an upbeat song, I would make it but never listen back just because it doesn’t really do it for me unlike the more monotone stuff which I could constantly go back to. I feel that everyone with a unique sound usually feels a tad separated from the rest and doesn’t quite know where to fit in, but that’s cool to me. I like discovering myself with each release, I don’t know where things could take me! I love experimenting.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called “Worldwide Drugs”, I made it toward the end of this summer just after a lot of stuff went down with myself and the people around me. Since I hate talking to people about private stuff, I just found a way to shape it into a song as a way to let stuff out. I guess it’s just my way of accepting that things enter and leave your life and it’s okay to feel down at times, not everything is perfect. It’s a bit of a downer I know, but it’s probably the realist song I have made so I love it.
What’s your local music scene like?
The scene in Ireland is on a roll for sure! I feel like eyes are definitely starting to turn over here and people are definitely giving us real attention. Our major festivals, Longitude and Electric Picnic are really stacking up homegrown talent, so it shows how much of an actual thing our talent here is. I would probably listen to the Soft Boys most, (Kojaque, Luka Palm and Kean Kavanagh). Producer wise as well, people may not be as tuned in but Jar Jar Jr and Gaptoof are running things worldwide and people may not know but they are from right here in Ireland!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
In the next 12 months, I’d definitely want to have enough songs in the bank to be able to do live sets. I only have like 5 songs up, 2 of which I’d actually want to perform so there is that. No promises, but hopefully I’ll have an EP out, but definitely more singles to come. I might have one more release to come before the year’s up, we’ll have to see!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Clairo and Steve Lacy.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Is it funny that I’m yet to perform live? I just have never had enough music, or music I’d actually want to use up until recent. Live shows coming soon I promise!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
One thing to know about me is, I’m all the way chill, mushy and sentimental. I heavily value things like trust and honesty, I am that type of person. If that is not you, we won’t gel together. I’m just mad picky when it comes to those around me, I could keep the smallest circle possible but as long as the people in it I know have my back, I’m okay with that.
