Every Monday I will be bringing you an interview with an independent band, duo or music artist. This week, I caught up with London based artist Lola Coca to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from the south coast, Portsmouth aka Pompey. I first got into music via The Smurfs (I was young) who at the time released a cover album of hits (Smurfs upside your head/Oops upside your head being a fave) and also via my dad teaching me a few chords on guitar.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I loved strong, outspoken female artists, Gwen Stefani, Lauryn Hill, M.I.A, Missy Elliot, Amy Winehouse…
Nowadays I’m influenced less by people but more by the sounds and progressions of Latin music, jazz standards.. (more so than when I was younger).
How would you describe your sound?
Currently I would describe it as non-format. The EVERY SEASON series I am releasing is a series of monthly songs based on the zodiac energy of the time. I still think my writing is a common thread through the genres dedicated to each zodiac sign, but non-format.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
“Dirty Little Secret” is the song for Scorpio season. Scorpio is a sign of death and rebirth, darkness and light, secrets and truth. The song was inspired by the idea of being drawn to our shadows, what we hide in them. It’s about our shadows keeping our secrets so long as we acknowledge them from time to time.
What’s your local music scene like?
In Shoreditch I’m pretty spoilt for the music scene. The scene here is literally like the backstage to the world stage. It’s like, you see people’s earliest shows, in their earliest stages… and then see them go on to national, international and then global success!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I have 4 songs left for the EVERY SEASON series (Sagittarius-Pisces) and also planning to do some shows in China!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I’m a gateway between learning about oneself via astrology, numerology and catchy pop music, and I’m soon to be their new guilty pleasure.
You can find out more about Lola via Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, Facebook, Instagram, SoundCloud, Spotify, Twitter or YouTube.
