Music interview: Hayes & Y

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Manchester band Hayes & Y to find out more…

Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Originally the band was started a while ago in Bulgaria, by Blago, Ivo and Rado and Dennis joined in 2016, while we were living in London. The three of us are from the same high school, so we know each other for nearly 15 years. Now we live in the same apartment in Manchester, which definitely helps in the process of making music and keeping the band going. There’s no fancy story behind the name, we wanted something that is unique and recognisable.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We get inspired by a variety of different style and artists, as everyone has different taste in music. We all like classic bands like Zeppelin and The Beatles, but also constantly keep in track with the music scene nowadays and get inspirations from artists like The 1975, Parcels, Tame Impala, etc.

How would you describe your sound?
We’re a rock band, we constantly evolve and try to bring in something new in our music. We can say we’re 80s influenced, from then on you just have to listen to the songs and find out for yourself.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest single is called “Disaster”, it’s a more guitar driven and uptempo track, which we enjoy playing live a lot and hopefully we managed to bring that energy into the recording. The theme of the song has to do a lot with celebrity culture and its meaningless.

What’s your local music scene like?
Being Manchester based, we have a lot of bands around us, the scene is one of the biggest in the UK and it’s very competitive. This is very demanding and drives us forward as a band, we always have to keep up with what’s going on around us.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
Our goal has always been to improve as a band, so we plan to release the best music we have and see where it gets us.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We’re open to collaborations, so many bands and artists out there, it’s hard to pick one.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We have a fair amount of experience in playing live, so there’s always something happening. We did a tour in the UK, while still being in Bulgaria, loads of good memories from there. We learn something new from every show, which makes us better performers.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We’re very DIY, we record our songs in our home studio, produce them and usually make the videos ourselves. Go check us out now!
