Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Liverpool based singer Luke Royalty to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Darlington in the north east of England but I’m now based in Liverpool. I was a late starter to getting into music, it wasn’t till the end of year 11 I had finished my GCSE’s and wanted to do something different with my life, sold my xbox, bought a guitar, joined a band and ended up doing music at college and fell in love with everything about it.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
The first band I fell in love with was the Stone Roses, I was obsessed with the culture of the early 90’s both in the UK and US. Now however my influences are very different I think. I love artists who write honest lyrics in any genre, they usually inspire me to sit down and write down my own thoughts. Rappers like Frankie Stew and Loyle Carner blow me away with their lyrical style.
How would you describe your sound?
At the minute it’s chilled and dreamy pop music, however I’m still trying to find the sound that suits me most. Some of the songs we have lined up for future releases are very different to how my two previous tracks sound.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called ‘October Seven’ and it’s about the indecisive feelings I felt towards the end of a failing relationship. Therefore, lyrically I didn’t want the song to have a conclusive ending as when.
What’s your local music scene like?
I haven’t been in Liverpool too long so I’m yet to find out properly. However I played some shows here last year in some mint venues. Liverpool Arts Bar being my favourite.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Planning to release 5 or 6 new singles with some lovely collaborations in there too. Hopefully getting back gigging as well once we’re told we’re allowed to play out again.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There’s so many people I’d love to work with, I’m open to working with anyone too. I think collaborating with others, in the studio especially, is one of my favourite things about the music game. In a dream world, I’d love to collaborate with Arlo Parks.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
My old bass player Dan Skilbeck once fell off stage into table full of pork pies, that was funny.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m really really really good at footy, could have played for England but I injured my knee…
