Music interview: SUB BLUE

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Merseyside singer Sub Blue to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
My name’s Sub Blue and I’m from Merseyside, I first got into music from a young age, my parents are very creative! My mum is big into fashion and clothing design and my Dad’s big into music, songwriting and rapping, so I think I was always destined to do something creative it just turned out to be music!

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences growing up were Michael Jackson, Prince, 2pac, Usher – these artists still influence me in my career today but my biggest influences now are Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and Drake.

How would you describe your sound?
I’d describe my music as Suburban blues; I take the name from my self described genre. I take a lot of inspiration from my friends and their stories and life experiences, I write a lot about teenage angst and heartbreak. I’d say those are my biggest influences.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is a record called ‘On Your Level’. The influence behind it was I remember seeing this one girl who a couple of people I know liked and tried to date wearing a Gucci bag, I wanted to write a record about a girl that everyone wanted and no one else could compare to.

What’s your local music scene like?
The local scene in Liverpool is growing, especially for R&B and Rap. A couple of years ago it was mainly just indie and rock bands who had the attention that’s slowly changing.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Things seem pretty uncertain right now with the whole pandemic but I plan on carrying on writing and making music. I have a lot of music ready to release so will be doing that at the same time. I was planning to head back to LA over the summer to write and record there but I think I’ll have to put that on hold for a while.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to work with KC Clarke again, Joey XL and Scribz Riley.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I remember the first time I played a show with my band – we were supporting XamVolo back in 2016 I think it was, and my guitarist had forgotten the riff for Aaliyah’s ‘Are You That Somebody’. We were just staring at each other and laughing on stage until he finally remembered.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That a lot of my records are written in my living room, so it’s always crazy for me when I hear them get brought to life in the studio and on stage.
