Music interview: Jax Delamare

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Music Producer/Songwriter/DJ Jax Delamare to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m originally from Jersey in the channel islands but have lived in Southampton since I was 3. I first got into music from the age of 13 as I took guitar lessons at school and was instantly hooked!

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I’d have to say Oasis and Stereophonics were my main influences growing up. I was always in bands for years and I just loved the idea of ordinary guys becoming hugely successful by playing music they loved. My influences changed as I got older as did my genre when I moved over to more of an EDM style. The main artists I listen to now are Avicii, Kygo, Calvin Harris and Zedd.

How would you describe your sound?
I like to call it Pop-Drop but don’t think that’s an official genre? Haha. Yeah I like to use a broad range of instrument sounds that range from Tropical House to Hip Hop and having a drop feel to the chorus. I don’t really live by any rules when making music, if it sounds good use it!

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest track is called ‘Loaded’ and it’s about youth culture and nightlife trying to summarise what I’ve witnessed or experienced on nights out and stuff. I wrote it trying to make it almost chronological to how I would go out for the night but most of the narrative is about friends stories in our whatsapp group chats the next morning!

What’s your local music scene like?
Yeah I think Southampton has a pretty strong scene, it differentiates a lot in terms of musical genre but I think there’s a lot of unearthed talent in the city.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I think in this current climate with Covid etc it is making this question increasingly more difficult to answer with the amount of uncertainty surrounding everything. But if I had to say I would love to head out on tour promoting my current and next single as I do really miss being out on the road.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I think I would have to say Zedd as I think his production ability is insane! I would definitely learn a lot!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Not so much with live but one of the funniest memories I have is when I went on my first UK tour with the band I was in at the time and we couldn’t afford to hire a van so we had to ask the drummer’s mum if we could borrow her Vauxhall people carrier… we’d show up to sound checks looking like we were doing a school run was hilarious!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I’m hugely appreciative of my fans!
