Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Louth artist Awesimon to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Louth, Ireland. I first got into music when I was about 16 years old in Transition Year. I’ve always had a strong passion and interest in music and a lot of things that revolve around it, whether it was dance, rapping or singing. In secondary school I had joined the school choir and I feel this is where it had sparked the flame in me to want to start making my own music. I had done a lot of research in what had to be done to start making my own music. So I then started saving up for a microphone and some other bits of equipment needed for a home recording studio. When I was all set up I first started recording covers of songs that I liked just for myself to get a taste of what it was like, but soon enough I had started writing my own songs and uploading them on Soundcloud. Most of the people listening to my music back then were just friends from secondary school at the time and I had known that they were going to be my biggest audience for the time being. I had realised that a reason why a lot of people from my school were not listening to my music is because a lot of them didn’t have Soundcloud and i wanted to make my music accessible to as many people as possible. This is when I decided to take my music to streaming platforms, so with this I began working on first project Young Mind EP.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I had and have a lot of musical influences, like back in the day it would be Drake, Big Sean, Travis and some Future. Nowadays I do gain a lot of inspiration from artists I listen to now like Trippie, Juice WRLD, The Weeknd and even newer artists like The Kid Laroi.
How would you describe your sound?
This is a very interesting question for me because I feel like i don’t have one sound, I love listening to so many different types of music just as much as I love making different types of music. I would like to think that I am a versatile artist and for now I think i’m at the stage where I am still trying to find what works for me as an artist. I still have a long way to go and maybe on my way there I’ll be able to have something more solid.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
I would describe my latest track ‘VSCO’ as a fun, upbeat club song. The inspiration of the song came from the photography application ‘VSCO’. From my research I came to the conclusion that a lot of girls use this application and in the track ‘VSCO’, I give my two cents about how I feel about girls who use the app and how I have a stronger attraction to them due to their unique style.
What’s your local music scene like?
The local scene here is going crazy right now. I’m literally witnessing people from here becoming stars in front of my eyes and you always love to see it. It always makes me happy when I see someone from my area make big moves in their career. I like to use things like that as fuel to push myself to work harder, it gives me motivation knowing that it’s possible to get somewhere with it after seeing someone who was also in a similar situation as you do big things.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
For the upcoming months I am stacking up on music, I have so much music lined up and more and I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with it. I know that if I keep on working I will have a better idea, but there is new music on the way always, maybe even a little project too.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There is so many artists I’d love to collaborate with, my dream collaborations would be artist like NAV, Jaden Smith, 070 Shake and Travis Scott and some Irish acts I’d love to make music with would be 7th Obi, Pat Lagoon and Ayo August.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I don’t really have many funny stories about any performances, but I do remember that one of the first times I had to perform I got really nervous and had 1 too many drinks, the performance went well, but I didn’t feel too good after it.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
The one thing I would like readers to know about me is I am working so hard towards my goals right now and even though it might not seem like anything is happening I know I’m going to find what I’m searching for. So remember the name Awesimon.
You can find out more about Awesimon via Facebook, Instagram, SoundCloud, Spotify, TikTok, Twitter or YouTube and you can find out how to listen to ‘VSCO’ here.
