Music interview: All Ears Avow

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Swindon band All Ears Avow to find out more…

Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
We are:
Claire Sutton – Vocals/Guitar
Jake Willcock – Guitar
Joe Bishop – Bass
Sean Ivens – Drums

We’re based in Swindon and we formed in college. Our band name actually comes from a Brandon Boyd song of the same name (from his solo album ‘The Wild Trapeze’).

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We all have a pretty eclectic taste, from Madonna and Bruno Mars to Limp Bizkit and Korn. Claire is the songwriter in the band so a lot of her early influences, like Roxette and Incubus, tend to come through in our music, but we are also influenced by bands like Yonaka, Fickle Friends, YouMeAtSix and Nothing But Thieves.

How would you describe your sound?
We’re a blend of the poppiest pop hooks and big dirty riffs! We’ve definitely embraced the poppier side of our sound more recently, but we have still kept that rock edge that we all love.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
We released a new single on 26th April called ‘Be That Nothing’. It’s about having to face reality over the last year in lockdown but is also a celebration of how we were forced to find new ways of finding excitement and release stress during a pandemic.

What’s your local music scene like?
We’re lucky to have a really active music scene here in Swindon and it’s one that we have all been a big part of growing up. Sadly as with a lot of music scenes recently we have lost a number of independent venues within the town (not to mention the pressures put on the music scene due to the pandemic over the past year) but luckily our scene is still there and going strong!

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We’ve been working really hard on a whole load of new material and content over lockdown that we’re really excited about! We’re also itching to get back on the road again very soon – we have a run of shows lined up at the end of July and can’t wait to see everyone’s faces.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Cardi B. Cos I like it like that.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We’ve played some pretty odd shows, but one of our favourite stories is from an all-dayer we did at a pub. During our performance a little old lady walked out of a door actually on the stage – turns out we were playing right outside her bedroom! Better yet, she had the TV blasting out Jurassic Park at full volume to compete with the noise of our set!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We’re almost completely diy and do all our music and film production ourselves! We’re currently writing this while ‘on set’ for our next single, in a garage, hanging a green screen.
