Music interview: Luna Blue

L-R Nick, Tom, Seb & Ryan

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Brighton band Luna Blue to find out more…

Who is in the band/duo, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band/duo name?
Ryan – guitar, Nick – bass, Tom – vocals, Seb – drums.

We all met back at Chichester university in 2014 whilst studying music. We all clicked quite quickly and decided to form a band together. The rest is history!

The band name came from someone Ryan and Seb were in a band with in college. He said it came to him one night in a dream. We all really liked the name so we decided to stick with it!

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We all have a vastly different taste in music:

Nick and Seb are both very much into their metal. They both would listen to a lot of Tool, Periphery, Tesseract etc.

Ryan and Tom are more into commerical and indie music. Both listening to bands such as; Foals, Don Broco, Nothing But Thieves, Two Door etc.

The band takes a lot of influences from the indie genre and a fair bit from pop. Artists such as Sigala and Two Door have been a strong influence in the band’s latest music.

How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is a blend of Don Broco, Foals, Two Door mashed together to make the signature Luna Blue sound!

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
We have recently just released our single ‘How does it feel’. This can be found on all major streaming platforms.

Our influences were taken more or less from the same places as usual, i.e indie bands/pop artists. One standout artist that influenced this track is Dua Lipa. The bass work in her latest album is fantastic and we wanted to create the same groove in our basslines.

What’s your local music scene like?
We are from Brighton so the music scene isn’t too bad! There are a few really good venues for unsigned bands to play in. The best ones we have gigged at are; Hope & Ruin, Green Door Store and Prince Albert. We have our upcoming headline show at Komedia which we are all really excited for!

There used to be a great venue called ‘Sticky Mikes Frog Bar’ sadly this had to close a few years ago. Shame because it was a fantastic atmosphere in there.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We have an absolute TON planned for the next 12 months!

Firstly, we are currently sitting on a whole bunch of new music which we want to get recorded and released.
We have 2 more singles planned to come out this year with music videos to follow.
We have secured some VERY exciting festival slots, follow us on social media to get updated on these!
We also have our first tour booked for August, again this is full of really great shows that we can’t wait to play!

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Foals would be an AMAZING collab! I think both of our sounds could join together to make a Frankenstein of pure epicness!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We have had our fair share of disaster gigs from our bass breaking halfway through a set to our singer starting a song in the completely wrong key.

One gig that has to take the top spot for me is a show we played in High Wycombe. The pub bought a massive festival stage and stuck it in their beer garden. As the night went on there were people living in the flats next to the garden chucking eggs into the crowd. Maybe not hilarious but certainly a gig we will never forget! Funny enough this same pub was where we played one of our first ever gigs and got booed off the stage!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Our live shows are absolutely AWESOME! Jam packed with more inflatables then a children’s swimming party, grooves so funky you’ll need new shoes the next day (from dancing), and you might even get serenaded by our bassist (we can’t keep him on the stage). Don’t believe us? Come see us live for yourselves!
