Music interview: Aaron Everything

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Co. Donegal artist Aaron Everything to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Co. Donegal in the North of Ireland. I lived with my grandparents and parents until I was 6 then we built our own house right across the road.

I first got into music from listening to the NOW CD’s as a kid I always did like sad songs more than up beat ones, Akon – Lonely was my favourite song for years back then. I took influence of music from my parents. My dad always listened to 50 Cent, Rod Stewart, Eminem and Rod Stewart in the car. While my mum would listen to Fleetwood Mac, James Blunt and Westlife, sure what Irish mammy didn’t listen to Westlife in the 2000’s?

I always knew I could sing but it just hit me one night when I was working in a bar why am I not using the money I’m making to do something I love? After quitting football in my teens I had felt like I had no passions for almost a decade so it was like a wave of joy hitting me when I found out how easy it was to get a set up to record at home and I haven’t looked back since.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up:
Eminem
50 Cent
James Blunt
Milky Chance
Chance the Rapper
Gorillaz
Blackbear
Tyler the Creator
Mika
MGMT
The Weeknd
Pixies
Joy Division
Alt-J

Now:
Phoebe Bridgers
Eden (An amazing Irish artist)
Bryson Tiller
Drippin So Pretty
Bob Dylan
Cutter Joys
Thundercat
HiatusCayote
Childish Gambino

How would you describe your sound?
Like a Kinder Surprise nobody knows what to expect with me. Every song I release is notably different but I think the huge stacks of vocals are something I try keep pretty uniform in each. The way I see it if I’m providing vocals and lyrics on a song I’m going to provide the hell out of them.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called ‘Babe Magnet’ and it is influenced by my struggles with body image and self confidence growing up. In the last few years I’ve really gotten to a place where I’m proud of the person I have become along with becoming really happy with the way I look.

So this song is for people who have had that same struggle. If they want to sing along and let everybody know just how sexy they are.

What’s your local music scene like?
In Letterkenny it’s pretty dead thank god we have the Regional Cultural Centre to put on for artists of all ages, they had me in for a pre-recorded gig during Covid and it really gave me hope for the local scene. There’s a few great bands like Happy Out and Sheerbuzz and Fierce Pit Bosses. There’s solo artists like Mike the Martian who I have collaborated with aswell.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
A release of either a single or an EP every month and a few music videos. I don’t think I could bear going another month without releasing content, I took 2 month break at the end of 2020 and it was excruciating!
I would love to get a live gig going in either the RCC in Letterkenny or Bennigans in Derry!

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Aw I would kill for a feature with Eden or Blackbear, they’re just 2 artists who I’ve looked up to since I was a teenager and would love to hop on a track with.

In relation to artists at home I’d love to do something with Fya Fox, Enda Gallery or Danny and the Major 7ths!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
My first performance in Derry was packed out and as soon as I got off stage on a pure high I ran to the toilet because I was busting and I was standing at a urinal beside some dude and he said ‘great set man that was unreal’ and he tried to high 5 me but I was like ‘man thank you so much but you need to wash your fuckin hands first’ hahaha.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m not in this music game for any clout, this music is my legacy. So this is why I don’t censor my art who cares if someone’s offended by your work, art is supposed to be offensive and abrasive. I’ll be that song on the charts someday they’ll love so much but they’ll be unable to play. I want to challenge this archaic system!
