Music interview: HUNYBEES

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Charlie from unsigned Hitchin duo HUNYBEES to find out more…

Who is in the duo, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
HUNYBEES are made up of Louis Bailey and Charlie Preston. We’re from a town called Hitchin, Hertfordshire where we met as kids. HUNYBEES is our name because as 15 year olds when we started this band we thought it was cool. But to be fair capitals and incorrect spelling is pretty sick.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We both had different introductions into music. Lou until we met was largely listening to math and mid west Emo, whereas I was listening to Miley Cyrus, Musical Theatre and Bring Me The Horizon.

In terms of the music that HUNYBEES make our main influences come from live shows that we go to together. We try to recreate that organic, energised feeling into our music.

How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is indie rock that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our debut EP “Filth” was released on June 18th. It’s a collection of songs we’ve been working on for a long time now. They’re super personal but with a thick glazing of irony. There’s elements of The Strokes, Richard Hell and The Beach Boys.

What’s your local music scene like?
We’ve been super lucky with our local music scene. We’ve been able to book and put on shows since we were 16 at Club 85, Hitchin. We’d pile in our school mates and mates of mates and their mates of mates, every 6 months or so with a few other local bands. And over time people would start to hear about the live shows and want to come along on their own accord.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Now that gigs and live shows are in sight, that’s what we plan on doing; as much as possible. We’re kicking it off with our London Headline 30th July at The Grace, London – which hopefully will be the first of many.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Bimini Bon Boulash.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Around half way through a gig if it’s going well Louis will do a 5 minute stand up routine or if going badly he’ll threaten to do a strip tease.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I am looking for someone to research whether Magic is a superpower and contact me personally. Lou says it isn’t.
