Music interview: lottie

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Essex singer lottie to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m originally from Essex, England. I first got into music when I used to perform in musicals, but I soon realised I have a real passion for writing my own songs. I met a really cool producer who encouraged me to record and release my own tracks and now a few months later, I released my first EP! It’s been a crazy, exciting and sometimes scary journey!

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I got raised on a lot of 80’s hair bands and rock (my mum is obsessed with Bon Jovi!) and I’d say that definitely helped to shape my music taste as I grew up. As I started to learn my own tastes, I really got into artists like Lorde, BANKS, Lana Del Rey and MARINA. I love the feminine energy that they all bring, and whilst they are in a pretty different genre to what I grew up with, I’d say that the emotion in their songs helps to connect them.

How would you describe your sound?
I think my music falls into the indie pop genre, with intimate lyrics and smooth vocals. The producer I work with, Hangi Tavakoli, is an Iranian producer who usually specialises in rap and hip hop, so I’d say his input gives my music an interesting twist.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is an EP called Dance With You. I wrote it because I wanted to make music that was from a lesbian perspective, the kind of thing I was desperately looking for when I first came out. It’s intimate and emotional and I am really proud of it!

What’s your local music scene like?
I currently live in Singapore, a place where LGBTQ+ rights are pretty minimal, so the scene and reception for my music isn’t huge. With the global pandemic there hasn’t really been much chance to explore the scene. In a few months I’m returning to the UK, and I am so excited to get stuck into the music community in my hometown.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I am currently writing and recording a new album to be released in a few months! I am really excited about it, and haven’t stopped writing new stuff since I started. I can’t wait to keep growing, writing and releasing new music.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
So many people!! I’d love to collaborate with rappers like Lil Simz, or other pop artists like Clairo or Lorde.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to perform any of my stuff live!! But I am super excited for when the opportunity finally comes around.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I love and appreciate everyone who takes the time to listen to my stuff! Knowing people actually listen to and enjoy something that I made is honestly the craziest, most humbling thought and it makes me so excited for the future.
