Music interview: Barefoot Magicians

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Dublin band Barefoot Magicians to find out more…

Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Barefoot Magicians formed in early 2017 after a recording session in Dublin’s prestigious Windmill Lane Studios. We dedicate ourselves to writing and performing original material based around a dance or urban blues groove and are known for pulsating live performances. Our live shows have been described as “Completely Consuming” Indie Buddie, August 2018 delivering “A live tonic of foot-stomping grooves” Alan Cummins Sun Newspaper, September 2020.

Members include; Dave Greene on harmonica and vocals, Graham Stewart on Guitars, Brian Steemers on drums & percussion, Paraic Carroll on Bass and Petra žižak on Keys.

The name of the band came about while staring at a poster of Lead belly, playing guitar barefoot on a porch.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Then; RCHP, Muse, Rage, Incubus, Pretty Lights, Fink, Moby, Half Moon Run, Foo Fighters, Beetles, Led Zeppelin, Linkin Park (non exhaustive list).

Now; RL Burnside, Gary Clark Jr, Muddy Waters, Sam & Dave, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, The Black Keys, Alt-J, Cory Wong, The Roots (non exhaustive list).

How would you describe your sound?
Upbeat Urban Blues & Grooves.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
“The Anthem” – Cover by Griz.
We have been playing this song live for over 4 years and finally decided to record our rendition of this electronic dance stomper.

What’s your local music scene like?
Current non-existent due to Covid restrictions in Ireland 😦
Before Covid, Dublin was a dymanic city for live music, we were gigging most weeks and weekends.
We hope to get out busking in the city again once restrictions allow.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Some late summer festivals and gigs with some new songs to record for the new year.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Gary Clark Jr.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We once played a festival aimed at families and kids. While performing, the roof of the stage got blown off by high winds, we were stopped mid-set and the whole festival cancelled due to hazardous weather conditions.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Barefoot Magicians are a band that all age groups can enjoy. Our aim is to get crowds up and moving to the beat while getting a millennial audience interested in blues.
