Music interview: Dave Thompson

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Hull DJ Dave Thompson to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Hull, music has always been a massive passion of mine. From growing up in the mid-80s listening to synth pop, to taping the top 40 on cassette in the early 90s. I was literally obsessed with all different genres, however it wasn’t till I started working in the nighttime economy as a glass collector at Oasis in Hull, did I really discover my love of dance music. One night our DJ needed a toilet break, he asked me to cover the decks.. giving me the instructions “press that button” when the song finishes.. I pressed that button and the crowd gave a little cheer.. wow.. that was it, I purchased my first pair of decks and starting crafting the art of DJing.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up, as mentioned I was influenced massively my 80s synth pop, Madonna, Paul Young, Wham etc.. however when I discovered dance music in the late 90s, people like Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, Armand Van Helden, was a massive influence. More recent, you have to be inspired by people like James Hype, incredible DJ, however use to push productions out in the early day to build his fan based and these became more and more polished until he struck gold with ‘More than Friends”.

How would you describe your sound?
I would describe it as high energy tech house, taking inspiration from artists like Dom Dolla, Fisher and the like.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Currently the “The One” is a very straight up tech banger, drawing inspiration from the Dom Dolla track San Fransdisco. My follow up track ‘In My DNA’ is a very Fisher inspired groove.

What’s your local music scene like?
Hull’s incredible for music, regarding electronic music we have a massive collective of individuals all pushing and starting to make waves. People like Ben Rainey, Lewis Roper, Ben Dooks, all local lads always willing to offer advice and guidance.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Well due to the pandemic, it’ll be great to get back gigging again. Currently I’m at Babylon every Friday and Saturday and I love the place, always an amazing atmosphere. I’ve got at least another 2 releases lined up, both with a notable label. I hope to get another few releases scheduled towards the end of 2021.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Anybody I’ve already mentioned would be incredible.
