Music interview: Megan Rose

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Essex singer Megan Rose to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Benfleet Essex. I grew up in a household where music was always being played, but if I’m honest I was singing from the moment I knew how to make sound. My mum always quotes Abba’s “Thank You For The Music” to me, saying I could “Sing before I could talk” and “Dance before I could walk”. I also spent a lot of time in America growing up, this definitely started my initial passion for Country Music.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I’ve always had a very eclectic taste in music. I grew up listening to the likes of Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, The Beatles, Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift and The Chicks. They are all still up there as some of my top influencers, along with more recent artists such as Ingrid Andress, Lady Antebellum, Maddie and Tae and The Shires.

How would you describe your sound?
My sound is Pop Country. My music is all varied and over the last couple of years especially, I seem to have really developed what I would call “My Sound”. With a combination of authentic and programmed sounds my music is Country with the ability to still be attractive to a British audience.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called “The Meaning of Living”. The Meaning of Living is a positive spin on a break up. It’s no lie that the 7 stages of a separation is a very real and raw thing. For me, I wanted to write a song that reflects the later stages of a breakup, once you’re able to reflect and actually be grateful for the happy memories and the positive outcome that relationship brought to your life. I hope the meaning behind this song will resonate with lots of people who have been through a similar thing.

What’s your local music scene like?
My local music scene is amazing. We are all very supportive of one another and between the open mics and live music venues. It’s like one big musical family.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I have my BIGGEST HEADLINE SHOW to date in October in my hometown of Southend. This show will be taking place at The Venue in Southend and tickets can be found via my website. The show is with a full band and is undoubtably going to the best show I’ve ever put on. I can’t wait.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Yes Maddie and Tae. I am such a huge fan girl and their songwriting is just insane!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I can think of one. In 2019 I sung at BBC Introducing Live at Tobacco Docks. I was singing outside of one of the main conference rooms where presenters spent time interviewing artists. Whilst I was singing, Dermot O’Leary was interviewing James Bay. A couple of my friends were listening and it turned out you could hear me belting out my songs the whole time they were speaking… Whoops hehehe.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I am an absolute nutter. Okay time to be serious. I think the biggest thing is that I am so grateful for the support, every stream and playlist my music gets added to does not go unnoticed and I want everyone to be aware of this. It really does mean the world.
