Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Eoin from unsigned Cork band This Place Is Death to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Frank O Brien – Vocals /Guitar
Eoin Leahy – Drums
Barry Meaney – Bass
We are a 3 piece alternative Rock band from Cork, Ireland, we met just from playing music in the same scene in different bands, and then we formed This Place Is Death together in 2012, through our mutual music tastes. The band name is taken from the tv show Lost, it’s the name of one of the episodes.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
It’s a wide range of influences, from Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, SoundGarden, Muse, Deftones. Even now our music tastes have changed a lot but we still always go back to those main influences.
How would you describe your sound?
Noisy, heavy, energetic. It’s definitely the sound of just 3 guys playing music that we love. It sounds like us, we make music that we like to listen to ourselves and if people like our music its an added bonus for us.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our recent release is our EP ‘Falling Out of Frame’ we recorded this back in 2016 in the UK with indie label Sound Hub, the tracks were sent to Metropolis Studios, London. The band broke up for a period from 2017 to 2019, we are very proud of these songs and we felt they deserved to be released, it’s been a long process but these songs sound just as good since we recorded them.
What’s your local music scene like?
It’s a busy scene with a lot of great bands playing, when gigs used to be a thing you could always find a band every weekend to see.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Practice practice practice, with hopes to return to live gigs in 2022, we are planning a live stream for this year too, and of course try and get our EP to as many ears as we can.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I think we are a band that are quite happy with making music with the 3 of us, maybe the chance to get to work with a producer like Flood would be a dream.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We played a festival in the Wilds of the Kerry mountains, there was a gazebo covering over the stage, we were a few songs into the set and with a gust of wind, the gazebo took flight, the legs of it hit some stage lights and nearly took out our bass player. We kept on playing though.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We just love to make music, we just hope people can give us a listen and if they like us that’s an added bonus.
