Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Bridlington singer Nick Tudor to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Hello, I’m from the seaside town of Bridlington in East Yorkshire. I first really got into music as my house was filled with Motown, The Drifters, Carpenters, The Beatles and Gladys Knight and the Pips. My Mum always had a stack of 7” singles on the go so music was constantly on, it was a great education and a fantastic start in life being surrounded by those sounds.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Like I say, a lot of Motown was on in our house and although I wouldn’t say they influence my writing now, they are rooted in my younger years so somehow I can’t escape it.
How would you describe your sound?
Very melodic with big choruses, you have to have a big chorus haven’t you. I’m very traditional in my songwriting, I’m very much of the verse/chorus brigade but it seems to work for me, but I’m also into the 30th year of doing this so maybe it doesn’t! Ha Ha.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest EP is called ‘You’re No Elvis’ and the title comes from a gig I did last October when a gig goer came up to me afterwards and said ‘that was alright that pal, I mean ya no Elvis but it was alright.” Ha Ha brilliant!
What’s your local music scene like?
With it being a seaside resort it’s very cover orientated which is fine, there’s an audience for everything but it’s something that’s never interested me. I started writing in 1990 and haven’t really looked back since.
I’ve never made any money from music, but it’s not about that though is it, a bit of petrol money and a pot of tea goes a long way.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I last gigged in October 2020 and I’d love to put a band together, because I’ve never been a fan of standing there with an acoustic. I need to hear Bass and Drums so fingers crossed a band of some sort happens and the dates will start coming in once again.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to write a song with Neil Finn. His melodies are ridiculous. I have to say though the band that means the most though is The Smiths, they really are my whole musical world. The day I heard them for the first time my life changed, literally. Nothing has come close since, they set the bar so high… I absolutely love that band!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Not so much funny, but the fact you could put me in traction after every gig, I give it all and although I’m a veteran in music circles around here my knee drops are part of my live gigs… I just can’t help it. I just can’t walk the next day 😬
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’ve always been totally into writing, gigging the whole thing. I think it shows in the fact that I’ve only been in two bands since I started in the early 90’s. I’m really committed and I’ve done so, so many gigs in my time all over the country and although I’m 50 in September, I’ll keep on going till these knees give way for good!
